Concept visual of an industrial boundary with feed preparation, a reduction shaft, a melt shop and a finishing hall, supplied with electricity and hydrogen.

Development program · Concept & preliminary analysis

Australian iron. An integrated industrial ambition.

KyperX's Australian green iron and steel program investigates a reference pathway connecting magnetite feed preparation, hydrogen-based direct reduction and electric steelmaking with their supporting energy infrastructure. The objective is to assess a commercially credible production route with lower emissions. Feed qualification, process balances, technology selection and project-specific infrastructure require further work.

Process concept

Follow the pathway from feed to finished steel.

  • 01

    Prepare the feed

Establish suitable iron-bearing material and feed preparation.

  • 02

    Reduce the iron

Investigate hydrogen-based conversion of iron oxides into direct reduced iron (DRI).

  • 03

    Make steel

Examine electric arc furnace (EAF) melting and subsequent refining.

  • 04

    Form the product

Consider casting and finishing against the intended steel specification.

Electricity supplies equipment across the pathway and supplies hydrogen production. Water, utilities, material handling and delivery interfaces also need to be resolved.

Electricity reaches every stage directly and also supplies electrolysis; hydrogen from electrolysis reaches reduction. One connected pathway

Electricity supplies equipment across the pathway and supplies hydrogen production. Water, utilities, material handling and delivery interfaces also need to be resolved.

Preliminary work

What the work has investigated.

The preliminary work has considered process architecture, equipment sizing, electricity and hydrogen requirements, industrial storage scenarios, sourcing economics and alternative ironmaking routes. A central question is how the supporting equipment and resources should match, so one subsystem does not define capacity in isolation.

  • Process architecture
  • Equipment sizing
  • Electricity and hydrogen requirements
  • Industrial storage scenarios
  • Sourcing economics
  • Alternative ironmaking routes

Development pathway

Build the evidence for the next commitment.

The program remains at concept and preliminary-analysis stage. Site, technology selection, financing and delivery commitments would require further project-specific work.

Current stage Concept & preliminary analysis

  1. 01

    Establish the process basis

Reconcile feed, product, hydrogen and energy assumptions.

  2. 02

    Qualify the options

Obtain suitable technology, feedstock and equipment evidence.

  3. 03

    Resolve the interfaces

Assess resources, utilities, delivery conditions and operating schedules.

  4. 04

    Plan validation

Define the tests and studies needed to reduce the critical uncertainties.

  5. 05

    Evaluate advancement

Consider a larger development stage against technical, commercial and project evidence.

Collaboration opportunity

Bring expertise to a defined part of the pathway.

We welcome discussions with process technology providers, equipment manufacturers, feedstock organisations, energy developers, universities and industrial partners. Prospective steel buyers can also discuss product requirements that should inform future development.

  1. 01

    Technology and equipment

Process technology providers and equipment manufacturers.

  2. 02

    Feedstock and energy

    Feedstock organisations and energy developers.

  3. 03

    Research and industry

    Universities and industrial partners.

  4. 04

    Future product requirements

Prospective steel buyers discussing requirements, not an order for available steel.

Questions partners ask.

Is a KyperX steel plant operating or under construction?

This page describes the development concept and preliminary work.

Is the production route final?

Hydrogen reduction and electric steelmaking provide the reference concept. Alternative routes have also been investigated; a final project technology decision is not presented here.

Can energy projects proceed independently?

Yes. Standalone solar, wind, storage and hydrogen enquiries are welcome and assessed on their own requirements.
